Weekend Recipe

Sara Evans's Honey-Beer Ham

Serves 16


  • 1 bone-in ham shank (8 lb)
  • 12 oz beer
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons whole cloves (or 1/2 tsp ground cloves)


  1. Heat oven to 275°. Place ham in a roasting pan with cut side down. Pour beer over ham. Drizzle honey evenly over ham. Pat sugar evenly over honey. Score ham and pierce with whole cloves (or sprinkle with ground cloves). Cook, uncovered, until internal temperature reaches 160°, 4 to 6 hours.

*Note: I actually bought ground cloves at the grocery store yesterday for something I was making and I couldn't believe they were $9.49. (OUCH) Since this recipe calls for Cloves, I'd suggest that you go to the Hispanic section at Bloom. They have little packets of whole cloves for just 55 cents. That will save you some money. :)
